Reflections on the Quran & Sunnah

Reflecting on the Saying of the Exalted (Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky)

Exegesis

Allah likened the Quran to the ṣayyib, the rain.

Reflection

That He said ka-ṣayyib (“like a rainstorm”) and did not say ka-maṭar (“like rain”); because the quality of the ṣayyib is lasting benefit, and it is not like maṭar, which may be relief-giving rain and may be punishment

And Abu Ubaydah said: when it is in punishment, it is “amṭarat,” and when it is in mercy, it is “maṭarat.”

And for this reason the Messenger of Allah said in the supplication: We have been given rain (muṭirnā) by the grace of Allah and His mercy. Muṭirnā is derived from maṭar

And His saying, the Exalted, {if you are inconvenienced by rain}: what is meant by it is definitely al-ghayth (relief-giving rain).

And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used the word maṭar:

From Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): ((That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he saw rain, would say: O Allah, let it be a beneficial rain (ṣayyiban nāfiʿan) ))

That the quality of the ṣayyib is benefit, and the Quran is of great benefit to its companion and a safety for him that does not harm him "because whoever holds fast to the Quran is safe from harm in this world and the Hereafter " — Fakhr al-Din al-Razi

And the companion of the Quran takes from this quality that he is of great benefit to people and does not harm others.

Rain may be little and may be much, whereas the ṣayyib is abundant, plentiful and dense; and likewise the Quran, for the believer, is of great benefit, with numerous benefits in this world and the Hereafter; its benefits cannot be counted.

That the Quran is a ṣayyib that puts out the fire of trials, calamities and turmoil; and in the accounts of those folk there is much of this: whoever recited his daily portion of the Quran, Allah put out a trial or a calamity from him through it and repelled it from him. He sees it with his own eyes and hears it with his own ears.

And the ṣayyib has numerous benefits: it benefits livestock, creatures, people, the land, the mountains and the fruits; and the Quran, every letter of it benefits its companion with ten good deeds —and Allah multiplies for whom He wills— and with light, knowledge and wisdom.

And its companion is of numerous benefits

That the soul, after the ṣayyib comes down, feels rest, joy and happiness, and that is what the reciter of the Quran feels after finishing his daily portion

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them)

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators) A parable Allah struck for the one to whom He gave the Quran and clear proofs, yet he did not act upon it; and the cause of his swerving from guidance: following desire instead of the Book; and preferring this world over the Hereafter.
