Reflections on the Quran & Sunnah

Moral Strength Is a Gift from Allah

And every moral strength—patience in all its kinds, steadfastness in times of trial, courage despite being few, and joy and gladness when calamities strike! All of them are gifts from Allah the Exalted and support from Him for the servant, not something of the servant's own making

Have you not heard His saying: (It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers)? And His saying (And be patient, and your patience is not but through Allah)

And this support descends upon the soul of the believer when it is filled with the spirit of the Qur'an. "And ta'yīd (support) is strengthening and enabling for inner work, and it is derived from al-ayd, which is strength; the Exalted said ﴿And remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength﴾ [Sad: 17]. And al-ayd is derived from al-yad (the hand) because it is the instrument of power, and the better view is that it is derived from al-yad, meaning He made him possessed of a hand, that is, of strength. And what is meant here is a moral strength, which is the strength of the message and the strength of patience with the harm of his people" — Ibn Ashur

So patience in carrying the message of the Qur'an, acting upon it, nourishing oneself with it, reflecting on it, and understanding it is from Allah's support and His granting of success, not from the servant himself. And patience in carrying the message is what gives patience of the other kinds: patience with calamity and patience in refraining from sin. For both are the fruit of patience in obedience, and the greatest and nearest of obedience is the Qur'an.

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them)

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators) A parable Allah struck for the one to whom He gave the Quran and clear proofs, yet he did not act upon it; and the cause of his swerving from guidance: following desire instead of the Book; and preferring this world over the Hereafter.
