Reflections on the Quran & Sunnah

Karāmah

Karāmah (a wonder granted to the righteous) is not that He folds up for you the distances of the earth, and the lands in their length and breadth.

Rather, karāmah is that He folds up for you the distances between the heart and the Lord: He removes from them the veils of withholding, purifies them from the intoxication of union, draws away from them the barriers to understanding, abrogates the images the world has imprinted in you, and brings you better than them or the like of them (Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent)?

And He overpowers your wills with His will (Then He said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly.") And He referred to the heavens with an absent pronoun (lahā, "to it"), and the meaning is that the lowliest of creation (the earth) obeyed, so He mentioned it to remind you! And at that, a person sees himself as small.

So when the rescue of His gentleness reaches you, and the clouds of His mercy appear, His will overcomes your wills; and even if you do not want Him, He wants you (and that Allah guides whom He wills)

O you, if love is not like this, then what is it?

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them)

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators) A parable Allah struck for the one to whom He gave the Quran and clear proofs, yet he did not act upon it; and the cause of his swerving from guidance: following desire instead of the Book; and preferring this world over the Hereafter.
