(We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget, except what Allah should will): evidence that forgetting, and its opposite, remembering, are by the will of Allah the Exalted, so they are within His written decree; and in it also is that forgetting is from Allah's decree, so one must be content if he forgets and not be distressed over it.
And that forgetting happens for a great wisdom, among which is that Allah makes us forget our pains; because if we remembered them, we would perish.
And among it is that Allah may make us forget a particular piece of information; because if we remembered it and mentioned it to someone, it might be a cause of leading them astray and misguiding them, not guiding them!
And conversely, you may remember a piece of information with one person and forget it with another; because it benefits that one and harms this one, so He made you remember there and made you forget here.
And in the hasan hadith (My Lord, make me forget what You have decreed, and help me with what You have left) The best way to deal with the past is to forget it, and if one cannot, then let him ask Allah for that! For none is able to make us forget except Allah the Exalted.
And the best way to deal with the present is to turn to what Allah the Exalted has given us.
And Allah has wisdom and knowledge in making him forget what he wanted to say.
And that a person relies on Allah the Exalted in his most subtle mental processes: forgetting and remembering, and does not rely on the methods and means of mental memory and psychological forgetting alone. And part of the wisdom of forgetting is that Allah makes you forget a particular story; because if you mentioned it in front of a group of people, you would open upon yourself a door of evil and trial that you do not know of, Allah knows it. So that is why He made you forget it.
The wisdom of remembering: I prayed to Allah to make me forget the name of a poem so that I would not search for it, yet it still keeps echoing in my mind, and I wondered about the reason? And the answer was: a test and a trial.
And one takes the means to remember by, such as technological tools, notes, and calendars, and does not rely on the feeble human memory, especially what involves people's rights and covenants; “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was afraid he would forget something he needed, he would tie the thread on his little finger or on his ring” And although some have graded this hadith weak, its meaning is good
"Abdullah al-Lahji said: And forgetting - as some of the knowers said - is from the perfection of gnosis; because Allah the Exalted has declared Himself free of it, and made it part of the reality of the servant."
