Reflections on the Quran & Sunnah

Our Lord, Give Us in This World [That Which Is] Good and in the Hereafter [That Which Is] Good

And among the people is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” and he will have in the Hereafter no share: this is a warning to the believer not to be like the disbeliever, who seeks only this world and does not believe in the Hereafter.

Rather, call upon Allah for the good of this world and the Hereafter (But among them is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”)

Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in account: meaning that the believers who supplicate for the good of this world and the Hereafter, He answers their supplication by giving them (a share: a portion), whether little or much, of what they earned: of what they supplicated for. And Allah is swift in account: He hastens to answer your supplication, as a reward for whoever believed in the Hereafter and did not limit himself to this world.

"For if you ask Him, He will give you a share of what you asked for in this world and in the Hereafter, and Allah hastens to answer your supplication." Ibn Ashur

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them)

(And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators) A parable Allah struck for the one to whom He gave the Quran and clear proofs, yet he did not act upon it; and the cause of his swerving from guidance: following desire instead of the Book; and preferring this world over the Hereafter.
